Spatial Mapping of NTFP Potential
Challenge
Buyers frequently approach Sangga Bumi to ask if there are certain wild tree or plant species in Bentarum. Sometimes we know, often we don’t. Even if villagers can confirm if a crop is present, it is not always known where or in what numbers. This lack of information means villagers are missing out on income from potential Non-Timber Forest Products.
Solution
Work with villagers to map key species and create distribution layers that show where potentially lucrative trees and plants are located. These distribution layers should be complemented with administrative data that clarifies ownership.
Progress
One of the most lucrative Non-Timber Forest Products is the illipe nut, which flowers in mast events from Shorea stenoptera dipterocarp trees. Working with villagers throughout Bentarum, we have mapped the location of 2,466 trees: 514 trees in Ulak Pauk, 481 trees in Pulau Manak, 476 trees in Sungai Ajung, 253 trees in Setulang, 168 trees in Tamao, 251 trees in Sungai Ulak Palin, 323 trees in Menua Sadap, 346 trees in Banua Tanga, 276 trees in Mensiau, 167 trees in Banua Martinus, and 211 trees in Labian.
